The Mackay Cycling Club proudly celebrates the following special events each season:
corry family shieldThe Corry Family Shield race was established in 2010 in recognition of the support the Corry Family have provided to the Mackay Cycle Club and the direct contribution of John, Len, Evan, Ryan & family members over the last 40 years has been instrumental to the survival and growth of the Mackay Cycle Club and cycling in general in Mackay.
The course for the Shield includes the challenging Habana circuit, with the deciding climb up Lynette Drive, "the dome". The history of the event has traditionally been fortunate for the "front markers" with Matt Laird winning in 2010, Bill Perry in 2011, and Nick Willey in 2012 (on the Marian-Eton circuit). |
peter hull handicapPeter Hull started racing with the Mackay Cycling Club in the early nineties. That was fifty years after racing in Victoria, where he was a sprint champion in his early years. Peter raced on the road as well as the track, but his passion was track racing. He became a coach in 2005, specialising in sprint racing. He travelled all over Australia pursuing his passion for the sport and winning many medals.
Peter or "Hully" as he liked to be called held several positions during his time with the club, and was instrumental to the revival of the club in 2003, when numbers had fallen to eight riders. The number of riders we boast today is a testament to Peter's commitment and hard work. Peter was proud to receive a Life Membership of the club in 2010, and was present for the first running of this race. Sadly, Peter passed away on the 26th of June 2010. This race, dedicated to his memory, has become a much sought after prize. Peter's wife Rehab continues to attend the race to present the winning rider with the trophy. |
