Above is the first photo we have of the club. It was taken back in 1957 ( to our best knowledge) and when the club was known as the Mackay City Wheelers
Starting Top left is Mr Nairn father to the lad in the middle bottom row. this family used to have the little shop on the way to far beach.Next is Jack Rodgers (See Rogers Shield).Wally Jackson left mackay not long after for proserpine and I never heard of him again. The forth man is Cliff Wyvill from Sarina he also had an older brother that rode occaionally. The tall guy after cliff is Dave or pappy dennis he was a gently man who had maybe the worlds longest engagement. The next 2 I'm not sure of I think one was a brother to Rod Duncan and the other MAY have had white in his surname. The 8 th fellow was a junior his name was Ray Flannigan .Rod Duncan is after ray and rod was a good training partner of Vince Smith (author of this passage) he was a pretty peddler. After Rod is Len or Lennie Goode his family had goode cordials in Sarina. Chick cross (jim's) father had a spray painting business near Shammies cordials and had trained an earlier champion who's name I cannot recall. Last on the top line is Harold Creese the Creese family had been a large Cycling Family . End of top row.
The Lady and the first 2 boys on the bottom row from the alhletics and I think the ladys name was Childs. Second row Boy Cheetham official and Jim's uncle Next is johny Burns a great gap chasser and thrilled the crowds when we raced at half time at the football. The first sash wearer is Barry Hhendrickson a good sprinter who I understand moved to Tasmania and I think won a state sprint title. The next man is Frank carvolt who worked at the post office and was the club president. Jim Cross is next with all the sashes and went on to win the Australian sprint title in about 1965 but while riding for Tasmania. Colin Robinson was Younger than Jim cross about 2 or 3 years and came from Walkerston, he was trained for a while by Ray Meyers.show official, then Joe Micallef for whome the Micallef Shield is run.
Last row 2 boys from the athletics followed by Merve Nairn followed by Vince Smith and lastly lou or john penny this is the younger of the 2 brothers.
